Chapter 20

Mari sat on a small wooden chair in Natya’s kitchen, with both Aiken and Rogan standing and glaring at one another. “Please, would you both sit? This is hard enough as it is without both of you towering above me.” Nervous energy pulsed through her. Since she’d exploded into action in the village center, she’d had more than enough energy, but now it threatened to drive her insane. Jittery and anxious, all she wanted to do was move, but she couldn’t.

Aiken looked down at her, his eyes softening. He brought his hand to her shoulder, taking the edge off with his simple touch. He pulled another chair close and sat, not once breaking contact with her. “Let’s do this and be done with it so we can go home.”

Home. What she wouldn’t give to be working in her gardens, in her home—anywhere else. “I’m not sure what Natya has told you, but I suspect it’s much like what she’s told us.”

Rogan pulled a chair back and sat. “I suspect it is.”

“Well, I’m not entirely sure I believe her. I mean, she wasn’t there. She can’t examine the energy surrounding the spell—”

“She’s not mistaken,” Rogan interrupted. “I wasn’t there either, but the draw is unmistakable. You are my mate.”

Mari spluttered and gripped Aiken’s knee. The moment she did, he covered it and gave a reassuring squeeze. “It may work that way for you, but mates aren’t chosen by physical attraction in Avalore. It’s a soul-deep connection, one you and I do not share.” Mari ignored the slight flinch in Rogan’s features, but couldn’t fail to notice the little relieved sigh slipping past Aiken’s lips.

“But you don’t deny the attraction.” Rogan leaned forward.

“I… well, no. I mean, I feel something, but I don’t know what it is.” Aiken’s leg tensed beneath her palm, but he remained silent.

“You’re lying. You want to spare his feelings,” he said, glancing at Aiken, “but you know as well as I do what I say is the truth.” He reached over and slid his fingertips from her wrist to her elbow and back again, smiling when she gasped and gooseflesh rose on her skin.

“Take your hand off her,” Aiken growled.

“And if I don’t?”

“I’ll take it off for you.” Aiken stood, sending his chair crashing to the wooden floor.

“Stop it. Both of you,” Mari snapped. “This isn’t helping anyone. If we can’t talk, how in the name of the Goddess will we be able to figure this out?”

Aiken righted the chair and sat again. “I’m sorry. You’re right. I think the only clear answer is to return to Avalore and speak with the Elders. Perhaps they can shed light on the situation.”

Mari shook her head. Nothing the Elders had to say would change anything. “No, but maybe in Bronom…”

“That’s it.” Aiken gave her the first genuine smile she had seen from him since they’d been captured. “Now that we know what we’re facing, perhaps we can find something in the tomes and reverse this.”

Rogan shook his head, his jaw set and his fists clenching.
